Oxygen Market Size in SADC
The SADC oxygen market stood at $X in 2022, picking up by 3.7% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Oxygen Production in SADC
In value terms, oxygen production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Oxygen Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of oxygen exported in SADC shrank sharply to X cubic meters, waning by -32.1% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 76%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, oxygen exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 114%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X cubic meters, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X cubic meters), making up a 5.2% share of total exports. Mauritius (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2022. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Zambia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest oxygen supplier in SADC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.
In South Africa, oxygen exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+6.9% per year) and Mauritius (+25.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 25%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Oxygen Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of oxygen imported in SADC declined markedly to X cubic meters, falling by -25.4% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, oxygen imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Mozambique (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Botswana (X cubic meters), Namibia (X cubic meters), Swaziland (X cubic meters) and Mauritius (X cubic meters) represented the key importers of oxygen, together making up 80% of total imports. The following importers - Madagascar (X cubic meters) and South Africa (X cubic meters) - each recorded an 8.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +23.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest oxygen importing markets in SADC were Mozambique ($X), Namibia ($X) and Botswana ($X), together accounting for 53% of total imports.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +19.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per cubic meter), while Botswana ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
