P-Xylene Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC p-xylene market decreased by -10.2% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

P-Xylene Production in SADC

In value terms, p-xylene production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 110%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

P-Xylene Exports

Exports in SADC

P-xylene exports contracted rapidly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of 99.9% against the previous year. In general, exports faced a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 206,852% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, p-xylene exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 76,554% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of p-xylene, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the p-xylene exports, with a CAGR of -34.3% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+98 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest p-xylene supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -34.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 205% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -0.7% per year.

P-Xylene Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of p-xylene were imported in SADC; increasing by 81% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 282% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, p-xylene imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 301% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Mauritius was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 83% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), comprising an 11% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of p-xylene. At the same time, Malawi (+28.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-33.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+57 p.p.) and Malawi (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zimbabwe (-42.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported p-xylene in SADC, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malawi ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports.

In Mauritius, p-xylene imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malawi (+22.7% per year) and Zimbabwe (-35.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (-2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
