The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -11.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 45%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X units of pacemakers for stimulating heart muscles (excl. parts and accessories) were exported in SADC; increasing by 156% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 513%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pacemaker exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 480%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X units), mixing up a 5.1% share of total exports. Mauritius (X units), Botswana (X units) and Namibia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +44.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+60.4%), Namibia (+26.8%), Mauritius (+19.6%) and Swaziland (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +60.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+32 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-2.4 p.p.), Mauritius (-8.5 p.p.) and Swaziland (-23.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pacemaker supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +29.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+9.7% per year) and Mauritius (+16.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 150%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Pacemaker Imports

Imports in SADC

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of pacemakers for stimulating heart muscles (excl. parts and accessories) decreased by -9.4% to X units in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, pacemaker imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 88% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X units), Namibia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+70.7%) and Mozambique (+26.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +70.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+2.9 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritius (-1.9 p.p.) and South Africa (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pacemakers for stimulating heart muscles (excl. parts and accessories) in SADC, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 1.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+65.0% per year) and Mauritius (+0.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country
