Papaya Market Size in SADC

The SADC papaya market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, declining by -4.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +5.3% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Papaya Production in SADC

In value terms, papaya production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of papaya production was Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), accounting for 63% of total volume. Moreover, papaya production in Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malawi (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mozambique (X tons), with a 13% share.

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, papaya production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malawi (+3.2% per year) and Mozambique (-0.1% per year).

In 2022, the average papaya yield in SADC reduced to X tons per ha, flattening at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 0.6% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of papayas production in SADC reached X ha, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1.1% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Papaya Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of papayas decreased by -9.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, papaya exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 103%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique represented the main exporter of papayas in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X tons). All these countries together held near 44% share of total exports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas exports, with a CAGR of +198.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+62.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+55 p.p.) and Angola (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -47.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Angola ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +169.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Papaya Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, papaya imports in SADC amounted to X tons, leveling off at the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 323% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, papaya imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 150% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas imports, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012 to 2022. Botswana (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+58 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Botswana (-16.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas in SADC, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +24.7%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price faced a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.
