Exports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups exported in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 31% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -0.3% against 2019 indices. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), mixing up a 7.8% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+93.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +93.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Madagascar (+7.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-1.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paper dishes and cups supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +4.3%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 26%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-3.6%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, imports of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups in SADC soared to X tons, picking up by 29% on 2020. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.3% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups imports surged to $X in 2021. Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented roughly 60% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Seychelles (7.8%) and Mauritius (6.2%). The following importers - Angola (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each finished at a 4.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +59.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper trays, dishes, plates and cups in SADC, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, paper dishes and cups imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+28.8% per year) and Botswana (+39.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
