Passenger Car Market Size in SADC

The SADC passenger car market soared to $X in 2021, jumping by 21% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Passenger Car Production in SADC

In value terms, passenger car production expanded notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -8.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Passenger Car Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X units of passenger cars were exported in SADC; remaining constant against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 173% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -20.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. Botswana (X units) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +2.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Botswana (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest passenger car supplier in SADC, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 0.1% share of total exports.

In South Africa, passenger car exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 273% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.9%).

Passenger Car Imports

Imports in SADC

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of passenger cars increased by 32% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 47%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, passenger car imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the largest importer of passenger cars, constituting 49% of total imports. Botswana (X units) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (9.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.2%) and Mozambique (4.8%). Malawi (X units) and Mauritius (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+23.5%), Tanzania (+14.9%), Malawi (+14.4%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-2.3%) and Mozambique (-18.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (+14 p.p.), Tanzania (+8 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.2 p.p.) and Malawi (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mozambique saw its share reduced by -15.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported passenger cars in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -5.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-2.5% per year) and Mauritius (+1.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 80% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+28.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
