Peach And Nectarine Market Size in SADC

The SADC peach and nectarine market reduced to $X in 2021, dropping by -10.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a perceptible curtailment. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Peach And Nectarine Production in SADC

In value terms, peach and nectarine production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a slight descent. From 2016 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of peach and nectarine production, comprising approx. 84% of total volume. Moreover, peach and nectarine production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malawi (X tons), more than tenfold. Madagascar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.7% share.

In South Africa, peach and nectarine production plunged by an average annual rate of -1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Malawi (+5.0% per year) and Madagascar (+0.5% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of peaches and nectarines in SADC declined modestly to X tons per ha, waning by -1.8% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 3.9%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of peaches and nectarines in SADC dropped to X ha, which is down by -5.4% on the year before. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the peach and nectarine harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

For the fifth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of peaches and nectarines, which increased by 27% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +77.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+11.9%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of peaches and nectarines were imported in SADC; shrinking by -7% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) were the main importers of peaches and nectarines, together committing 90% of total imports. Zambia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest peach and nectarine importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Mauritius ($X), together comprising 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 19%.

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
