In 2021, overseas purchases of pears increased by 5.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pear imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Botswana (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) represented roughly 40% of total imports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Swaziland (10%), Lesotho (9.2%), Angola (8.7%), Zimbabwe (6.7%) and Zambia (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lesotho (with a CAGR of +216.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 58% of total imports. These countries were followed by Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further 26%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Lesotho, with a CAGR of +14.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
