The SADC dry peas market shrank to $X in 2021, which is down by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a pronounced contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry peas production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Tanzania (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), with a combined 91% share of total production. These countries were followed by Mozambique and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 5.2%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +0.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The average dry peas yield stood at X kg per ha in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the dry peas yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The dry peas harvested area reduced to X ha in 2021, which is down by -6.7% against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to dry peas production reached the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of peas (dry) increased by 106% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry peas exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tanzania was the main exporter of peas (dry) in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Malawi (8.2%), Mozambique (7.3%) and South Africa (6.4%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dry peas exports from Tanzania stood at -15.9%. South Africa (-5.0%), Madagascar (-6.6%), Mozambique (-8.7%) and Malawi (-18.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Madagascar, South Africa and Mozambique increased by +6.1, +4 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) emerged as the largest dry peas supplier in SADC, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 14% share.

In Tanzania, dry peas exports shrank by an average annual rate of -19.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (-9.0% per year) and South Africa (-4.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of peas (dry) increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dry peas imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +92.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 55%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of peas (dry) in SADC, creating 73% of total import. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together making up a 15% share of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malawi (with a CAGR of +82.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Malawi ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 73% share of total imports.

Malawi, with a CAGR of +65.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
