In 2022, overseas shipments of percussion musical instruments increased by 29% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, percussion musical instrument exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a mild increase. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units), making up a 15% share of total exports. Madagascar (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the percussion musical instruments exports, with a CAGR of -3.7% from 2012 to 2022. Namibia (-7.3%) and Madagascar (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +12 percentage points.

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+26.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
Percussion musical instrument imports stood at X units in 2022, rising by 14% on 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. South Africa represented the largest importer of percussion musical instruments in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was near 69% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units) and Tanzania (X units), together generating a 23% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to percussion musical instrument imports into South Africa stood at -3.6%. At the same time, Tanzania (+17.7%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +17.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-13.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 7.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -9.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+13.3% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -22.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
