The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, phosphinates and phosphonates imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 165% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites), constituting 53% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), together constituting a 38% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - each finished at a 5.5% share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+68.1%), Tanzania (+51.9%), Malawi (+28.4%) and Madagascar (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +68.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-1.6%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-17.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+13 p.p.), Malawi (+7.1 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.5 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-6 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-7.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported phosphinates (hypophosphites) and phosphonates (phosphites) in SADC, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 7.3% share.
In South Africa, phosphinates and phosphonates imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+55.8% per year) and Zimbabwe (-3.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
