Market Size for Phosphorus, Arsenic And Selenium in SADC

In 2021, the SADC phosphorus, arsenic and selenium market decreased by -0.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw significant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -11.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

Phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, rising by 34% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 109%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a precipitous setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 536%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium, comprising 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), mixing up a 28% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports, with a CAGR of -21.9% from 2012 to 2021. Namibia (-50.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+67 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-67.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest phosphorus, arsenic and selenium supplier in SADC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 32% share of total exports.

In Namibia, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium exports decreased by an average annual rate of -48.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -21.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 518% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.3%).

Imports of Phosphorus, Arsenic And Selenium

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium were imported in SADC; with a decrease of -7.2% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the one major importers of phosphorus, arsenic and selenium, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports, with a CAGR of -4.6% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported phosphorus, arsenic and selenium in SADC.

In South Africa, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium imports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 57% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium import price increased by +78.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
