In 2021, photographic paper exports in SADC skyrocketed to X square meters, picking up by 20% on 2020. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, photographic paper exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 143% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X square meters, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X square meters), making up a 9.7% share of total exports. Mauritius (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+21.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-30.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland and South Africa increased by +9 and +7.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest photographic paper supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -12.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (-25.9% per year) and Swaziland (-2.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per square meter), while Swaziland ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles were finally on the rise to reach X square meters after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Tanzania represented the main importing country with an import of around X square meters, which accounted for 52% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X square meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X square meters) and Angola (X square meters). All these countries together took near 31% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X square meters), Botswana (X square meters) and Lesotho (X square meters) - together made up 8.7% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to photographic paper imports into Tanzania stood at -3.6%. At the same time, Zambia (+10.6%), Botswana (+7.6%) and Lesotho (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.2%), Angola (-12.4%) and South Africa (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+20 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.7 p.p.), Zambia (+2.9 p.p.), Botswana (+2 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3.7% and -17% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported photographic paper, paperboard and textiles in SADC, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tanzania totaled -4.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-18.3% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-7.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per square meter in 2021, growing by 28% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
