Moreover, pimenta pepper production in Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Africa (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Tanzania (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Democratic Republic of the Congo was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+0.4% per year) and Tanzania (-0.5% per year).
The average pimenta pepper yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 1.6% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the pimenta pepper yield attained the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of pimenta pepper were harvested in SADC; approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 1.9% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the pimenta pepper harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
For the fifth consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of pimenta pepper, which increased by 22% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, pimenta pepper exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 102%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Zambia was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 52% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Malawi (14%), Zimbabwe (13%) and Tanzania (5.5%).
Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pimenta pepper exports, with a CAGR of +45.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+34.1%), Malawi (+6.6%) and South Africa (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Zambia and Tanzania increased by +49 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest pimenta pepper supplying countries in SADC were Zambia ($X), Malawi ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 77% share of total exports.
Zambia, with a CAGR of +49.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -0.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +41.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 37%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
In value terms, pimenta pepper imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 37%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 94% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pimenta pepper imports into South Africa stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Angola (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +2.3 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pimenta pepper in SADC, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 5.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +6.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+8.1% per year) and Angola (+4.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
