The country with the largest volume of piper pepper production was Madagascar (X tons), comprising approx. 49% of total volume. Moreover, piper pepper production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (X tons), with a 17% share.
In Madagascar, piper pepper production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Zimbabwe (+1.2% per year) and South Africa (-2.9% per year).
The average piper pepper yield expanded modestly to X kg per ha in 2022, increasing by 3.5% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The piper pepper harvested area shrank to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -5.6% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
Piper pepper exports dropped to X tons in 2022, which is down by -4.1% on 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 32%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, piper pepper exports contracted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Madagascar represented the largest exporter of piper pepper in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (9.7%). The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest piper pepper supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 92% share of total exports.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 8.9%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of piper pepper decreased by -4.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, piper pepper imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), constituting a 5% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Angola (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to piper pepper imports into South Africa stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Lesotho (+20.8%) and Mauritius (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+15 p.p.) and Lesotho (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-2.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported piper pepper in SADC, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 1.6% share.
In South Africa, piper pepper imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+3.5% per year) and Angola (-9.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 49%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
