Pistachio Market Size in SADC

The SADC pistachio market expanded notably to $X in 2022, rising by 7.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Pistachio Production in SADC

In value terms, pistachio production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Madagascar (X tons) remains the largest pistachio producing country in SADC, comprising approx. 99% of total volume.

In Madagascar, pistachio production increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average yield of pistachios in SADC reached X kg per ha, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the pistachio yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pistachios production in SADC contracted to X ha, declining by -4.5% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 50%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Pistachio Exports

Exports in SADC

Pistachio exports contracted notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -30% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,441% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 832% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pistachios exports, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012 to 2022. Madagascar (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +33 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pistachio supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 3.3% share of total exports.

In South Africa, pistachio exports expanded at an average annual rate of +34.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio export price increased by +68.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Madagascar stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+4.4%).

Pistachio Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, imports of pistachios in SADC soared to X tons, increasing by 37% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, pistachio imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 103%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), creating a 9.4% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pistachio imports into South Africa stood at +5.7%. At the same time, Botswana (+44.7%) and Mauritius (+24.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +44.7% from 2012-2022. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritius and Botswana increased by +7.5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pistachios in SADC, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +4.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+21.8% per year) and Botswana (+55.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 43%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
