Plaits And Basketwork Market Size in SADC

The SADC plaits and basketwork market amounted to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of plaits, basketwork, wickerwork and similar products of plaiting materials decreased by -28.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 237%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, plaits and basketwork exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 238%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Madagascar represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 21% share of total exports.

Madagascar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plaits, basketwork, wickerwork and similar products of plaiting materials exports, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Madagascar increased by +37 percentage points.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest plaits and basketwork supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Madagascar amounted to +14.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 13%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of plaits, basketwork, wickerwork and similar products of plaiting materials were imported in SADC; shrinking by -8.2% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plaits and basketwork imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 61% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.8%) and Mauritius (5.5%). The following importers - Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 9.3% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.4%), Tanzania (+8.0%), Botswana (+6.8%) and Mozambique (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-1.0%) and Mauritius (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+7.2 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.4 p.p.), Botswana (+1.7 p.p.), Mozambique (+1.7 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-12.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plaits, basketwork, wickerwork and similar products of plaiting materials in SADC, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 6.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+2.2% per year) and Namibia (-3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern.
