Plastic Lavatory Seat Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the SADC plastic lavatory seat market, when its value decreased by -5.4% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, plastic lavatory seat production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 133%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of plastic lavatory seats and covers exported in SADC declined notably to X units, with a decrease of -19.2% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic lavatory seat exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of plastic lavatory seats and covers, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic lavatory seats and covers exports, with a CAGR of -3.5% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest plastic lavatory seat supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 1.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, plastic lavatory seat export price decreased by -18.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +2.0% per year.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, overseas purchases of plastic lavatory seats and covers increased by 16% to X units for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 75%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic lavatory seat imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 75%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which resulted at 42% of total imports. Angola (X units) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (10%) and Mozambique (7.8%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Namibia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Zambia (X units), Malawi (X units), Mauritius (X units), Botswana (X units), Lesotho (X units) and Swaziland (X units) held a little share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of plastic lavatory seats and covers. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.0%), Tanzania (+10.3%), Namibia (+8.8%), Lesotho (+8.3%), Mozambique (+5.7%), Malawi (+5.1%) and Angola (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2021. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-1.6%), Botswana (-4.6%), Mauritius (-5.0%) and Zambia (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+5.4 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.7 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritius (-1.7 p.p.), Zambia (-3.9 p.p.) and South Africa (-7.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic lavatory seats and covers in SADC, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 15% share.

In South Africa, plastic lavatory seat imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+17.3% per year) and Angola (-2.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
