Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic packaging exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of plastic packaging in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), comprising a X% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of plastic packaging. At the same time, Lesotho (X%), Botswana (X%), Namibia (X%) and Swaziland (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (X%) and Tanzania (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Lesotho increased by X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, approx. X tons of plastic packaging were imported in SADC; with an increase of X% on 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic packaging imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of plastic packaging, namely South Africa, Angola and Zambia, represented more than half of total import. Mozambique (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Tanzania (X%), Zimbabwe (X%) and Namibia (X%). Madagascar (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
