In 2021, the SADC lamp plastic parts market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In 2021, shipments abroad of plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings increased by 159% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lamp plastic parts exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 97%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings in SADC, achieving 96% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings exports, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (+5.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest lamp plastic parts supplier in SADC.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -43.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lamp plastic parts imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 43%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 42% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 42% share of total imports. Zambia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Angola (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to lamp plastic parts imports into South Africa stood at -6.7%. At the same time, Malawi (+35.6%), Zambia (+5.8%) and Mozambique (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-2.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.3%), Madagascar (-10.0%) and Angola (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malawi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique increased by +5.7, +3.5, +2.8, +2.3 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic parts for lamps and lighting fittings in SADC, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 3.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -2.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.0% per year) and Madagascar (-1.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 26%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
