In 2021, approx. X tons of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip were exported in SADC; with a decrease of -3.9% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in strip structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), comprising a 6.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip exports from South Africa stood at +1.5%. At the same time, Malawi (+35.7%) and Namibia (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malawi (+5.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3.2 p.p.) and Tanzania (-3.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +2.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malawi (+29.5% per year) and Tanzania (-3.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip in SADC soared to X tons, rising by 28% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip, achieving 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together creating a 38% share of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+19.8%), Zambia (+11.3%), Zimbabwe (+9.3%), Tanzania (+7.9%), Angola (+7.0%) and Mauritius (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.8% from 2012-2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.9 p.p.), Zambia (+3.3 p.p.), Tanzania (+1.9 p.p.), Angola (+1.7 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -17.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+8.3% per year) and Zambia (+8.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Zambia ($X per ton) and Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
