Plastic Household Ware Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC plastic household ware market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic household ware production rose significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of plastics household articles and toilet articles increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic household ware exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 36%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Angola (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+55.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +55.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.6%) and Malawi (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Angola increased by +19 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic household ware supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 1.3% share.

In South Africa, plastic household ware exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-11.5% per year) and Malawi (-20.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Plastic Household Ware Imports

Imports in SADC

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of plastics household articles and toilet articles increased by 23% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic household ware imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 41% of total imports in 2021. Mozambique (X tons) held a 9.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (9.5%), Zimbabwe (8.1%), Botswana (7.9%) and Namibia (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic household ware importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
