Platinum Catalysts Market Size in SADC

The SADC platinum catalysts market shrank to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, platinum catalysts production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, platinum catalysts exports in SADC declined sharply to X kg, waning by -57.8% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a precipitous shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 6,853%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, platinum catalysts exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 5,088% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Botswana (X kg) represented the major exporter of platinum catalysts, comprising 74% of total exports. Swaziland (X kg) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total exports. Namibia (X kg) took a little share of total exports.

Botswana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the platinum catalysts exports, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012 to 2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Swaziland (-12.9%) and South Africa (-44.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+74 p.p.), Swaziland (+13 p.p.) and Namibia (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-79.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest platinum catalysts supplier in SADC, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -33.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+22.0% per year) and Botswana (+6.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per kg in 2022, declining by -85.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 3,688% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Botswana ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+40.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

Platinum catalysts imports shrank significantly to X kg in 2022, falling by -37.4% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports faced a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, platinum catalysts imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, recording X kg, which was near 74% of total imports in 2022. Zambia (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.1% share, followed by Angola (6.7%). Zimbabwe (X kg), Mozambique (X kg) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to platinum catalysts imports into South Africa stood at -39.5%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+21.5%), Mozambique (+12.8%) and Zambia (+10.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-16.2%) and Zimbabwe (-23.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+7.1 p.p.), Angola (+6.3 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.6 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.5 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -23.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported platinum catalysts in SADC, comprising 100% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 0.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with less than 0.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -20.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (-18.0% per year) and Zambia (-9.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per kg in 2022, reducing by -55.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 325%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per kg, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Mozambique ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
