The SADC playing cards market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Playing Cards Production in SADC
In value terms, playing cards production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
Playing cards exports rose markedly to X tons in 2022, growing by 7% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 167%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, playing cards exports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 224%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. Angola (X kg) and Zambia (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the playing cards exports, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (+79 p.p.) and Angola (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest playing cards supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports.
In South Africa, playing cards exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+11.0% per year) and Angola (-16.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 271% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Playing Cards Imports
Imports in SADC
For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in purchases abroad of playing cards, which increased by 2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 71%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, playing cards imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons) were the key importers of playing cards in 2022, accounting for approx. 33% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Madagascar (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (10%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.2%) and Mozambique (5.2%). Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported playing cards in SADC, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 9.3% share.
In South Africa, playing cards imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+6.3% per year) and Tanzania (+7.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 35%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
