Plum And Sloe Market Size in SADC

The SADC plum and sloe market stood at $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +99.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 85%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of plums and sloes in SADC, creating 99.9% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plums and sloes exports, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest plum and sloe supplier in SADC.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 36%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Botswana (X tons), distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) represented the key importers of plums and sloes, together making up 94% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +42.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plum and sloe importing markets in SADC were Botswana ($X), Mauritius ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 71% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 21%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +21.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
