The SADC polyamide market rose slightly to $X in 2021, picking up by 4.1% against the previous year. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polyamide exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), achieving a 4.8% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+25.8%) and Tanzania (+22.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland and Tanzania increased by +4.4 and +2.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest polyamide supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -3.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+19.6% per year) and Zambia (-5.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, polyamide imports in SADC surged to X tons, with an increase of 35% compared with 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polyamides (in primary forms) in SADC.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 30% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
