As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of polyethylene with a specific gravity of less than X, in primary forms skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 29%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of polyethylene with a specific gravity of less than X, in primary forms soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 45% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (8.6%) and Zimbabwe (8.3%). The following importers - Angola (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to polyethylene with a specific gravity of less than X imports into South Africa stood at -5.6%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.3%), Tanzania (+11.4%), Mozambique (+9.9%), Zimbabwe (+7.4%), Angola (+7.3%), Namibia (+6.8%), Mauritius (+4.6%), Madagascar (+1.3%) and Zambia (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malawi (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +9.8, +4.4, +2.3, +1.9, +1.7, +1.7 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polyethylene with a specific gravity of less than X, in primary forms in SADC, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 9.5% share.
In South Africa, imports of polyethylene with a specific gravity of less than X, in primary forms contracted by an average annual rate of -6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+14.0% per year) and Zimbabwe (+6.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mozambique ($X per ton) and Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
