The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of polypropylene in primary forms in SADC, mixing up 99% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the polypropylene in primary forms exports, with a CAGR of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, overseas purchases of polypropylene in primary forms decreased by -0.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Tanzania was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Angola (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together constituting a 58% share of total imports.

Imports into Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+22.1%), Zimbabwe (+9.2%), Zambia (+8.8%), South Africa (+8.6%), Malawi (+5.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.1%) and Angola (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Mozambique (+6.5 p.p.), South Africa (+2.4 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-2.2 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.4 p.p.) and Angola (-3.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polypropylene in primary forms in SADC, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 10% share.

In Tanzania, polypropylene in primary forms imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+6.0% per year) and Zambia (+6.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in South Africa ($X per ton) and Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) and Mozambique ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
