Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, polystyrene exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 78%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the largest exporter of polystyrene in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), making up a 17% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+45.9%) and Tanzania (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +45.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Swaziland increased by +17 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest polystyrene supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports.
In South Africa, polystyrene exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+34.7% per year) and Tanzania (+8.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of polystyrene were imported in SADC; with a decrease of -7.9% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, polystyrene imports rose to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of polystyrene. At the same time, Tanzania (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +1.9% from 2012-2022. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
