In 2022, overseas shipments of polyvinyl chloride decreased by -17.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyvinyl chloride exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 54%. The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polyvinyl chloride export price increased by +104.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 73%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2022, imports of polyvinyl chloride in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 20% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, polyvinyl chloride imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 42% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Malawi (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each reached a 5.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to polyvinyl chloride imports into South Africa stood at +9.4%. At the same time, Botswana (+10.7%), Tanzania (+9.5%), Malawi (+6.8%), Zimbabwe (+6.4%) and Zambia (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+3.4 p.p.), Botswana (+3.3 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-4.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest polyvinyl chloride importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +16.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
