After two years of growth, the SADC positive displacement pump market decreased by -3% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +17.1% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of positive displacement pumps and hand pumps were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 2,690%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, positive displacement pump exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 182%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the five major exporters of positive displacement pumps and hand pumps, namely South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), achieving a 5.4% share of total exports. Swaziland (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +51.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest positive displacement pump supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +8.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-5.7% per year) and Angola (+22.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -16.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 280% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of positive displacement pumps and hand pumps, when their volume decreased by -9.4% to X units. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, positive displacement pump imports dropped to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Zambia was the largest importer of positive displacement pumps and hand pumps in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 57% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Tanzania (9.3%). The following importers - Angola (X units) and Malawi (X units) - each recorded an 8.5% share of total imports.
Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the positive displacement pumps and hand pumps imports, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+5.3%) and Tanzania (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-2.0%) and Angola (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zambia (+40 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-4.1 p.p.), Angola (-7.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-19.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest positive displacement pump importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Zambia ($X) and Malawi ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports.
Zambia, with a CAGR of +16.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
