In 2021, overseas shipments of power tools increased by 35% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 363%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, power tool exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa (X units) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2021.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the power tools exports, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest power tool supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -10.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 191% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas purchases of power tools, which increased by 66% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, power tool imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Mauritius (X units), Tanzania (X units), Namibia (X units), Mozambique (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Angola (X units) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to power tool imports into South Africa stood at +5.1%. At the same time, Mozambique (+30.6%), Tanzania (+19.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.0%), Mauritius (+11.6%) and Namibia (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-2.3 p.p.) and South Africa (-5.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported power tools in SADC, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 4.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4% share.

In South Africa, power tool imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-4.3% per year) and Tanzania (+10.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 92%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
