In 2022, the SADC prefabricated buildings market decreased by -27.4% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of prefabricated buildings exported in SADC soared to X units, picking up by 68% against 2021 figures. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +106.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, prefabricated buildings exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X units) represented roughly 93% of total exports in 2022.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prefabricated buildings exports, with a CAGR of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest prefabricated buildings supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -31.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -7.0% per year.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of prefabricated buildings increased by 2.9% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 165%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, prefabricated buildings imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Tanzania (X units) was the major importer of prefabricated buildings, committing 36% of total imports. Angola (X units) held a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (9.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (8.8%), Malawi (6.8%), Botswana (5.3%) and Lesotho (5%).
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prefabricated buildings imports, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lesotho (+8.7%), Botswana (+6.2%) and Malawi (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-3.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.3%) and Angola (-13.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+23 p.p.), Lesotho (+3.1 p.p.), Botswana (+2.8 p.p.) and Malawi (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -2.9% and -23.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prefabricated buildings in SADC, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8.8% share.
In Tanzania, prefabricated buildings imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-11.5% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -13.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Lesotho ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
