For the fourth year in a row, the SADC prepared additives for cements market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -2.2% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, showed a measured expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, prepared additives for cements production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 162%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, prepared additives for cements exports in SADC surged to X tons, rising by 31% compared with 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared additives for cements exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +63.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 33%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. Seychelles (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Seychelles (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Seychelles increased by +1.9 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest prepared additives for cements supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Seychelles ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports.

In South Africa, prepared additives for cements exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.8%).

Imports in SADC

Prepared additives for cements imports fell to X tons in 2022, which is down by -7.9% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 7,019%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, prepared additives for cements imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 35%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented roughly 85% of total imports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Angola ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 57% share of total imports. Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 5,421%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (-1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
