Lubricant Additives Production in SADC
In value terms, lubricant additives production reduced notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +33.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, shipments abroad of prepared additives for mineral oils decreased by -21.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 53%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lubricant additives exports plummeted to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), committing a 7% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Zambia (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest lubricant additives supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 4.2% share of total exports.
In South Africa, lubricant additives exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.8%).

Imports in SADC
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of prepared additives for mineral oils, when their volume increased by 9.9% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lubricant additives imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 80% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), generating a 9.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 5.9% of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of prepared additives for mineral oils. At the same time, Zambia (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012-2021. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -2.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared additives for mineral oils in SADC, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-4.8% per year) and Tanzania (+0.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 5.4%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Tanzania ($X per ton) and Zambia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Angola ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
