Explosives Market Size in SADC

The SADC explosives market stood at $X in 2021, growing by 6.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Explosives Production in SADC

In value terms, explosives production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -10.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 46%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Explosives Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of prepared explosives exported in SADC soared to X tons, growing by 23% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild contraction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, explosives exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), generating a 22% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.1% from 2012 to 2021. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Zambia (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest explosives supplier in SADC, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

In South Africa, explosives exports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.7%).

Explosives Imports

Imports in SADC

Explosives imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 32% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, explosives imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe represented the main importer of prepared explosives in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 42% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (17%) and Zambia (6.4%). Botswana (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to explosives imports into Zimbabwe stood at +5.5%. At the same time, South Africa (+12.8%) and Tanzania (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.4%), Zambia (-12.1%), Namibia (-12.1%) and Botswana (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe, Tanzania and South Africa increased by +18, +11 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest explosives importing markets in SADC were Zimbabwe ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +6.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
