Preserved Asparagus Market Size in SADC

The SADC preserved asparagus market amounted to $X in 2022, increasing by 4.1% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved asparagus production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 33%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in shipments abroad of preserved asparagus, which increased by 49% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved asparagus exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 137% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Namibia was the largest exporter of preserved asparagus in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), generating a 29% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Namibia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the preserved asparagus exports, with a CAGR of +139.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+41.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Namibia and Madagascar increased by +67 and +24 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest preserved asparagus supplying countries in SADC were Namibia ($X), Madagascar ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 99.9% share of total exports.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +158.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -9.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of preserved asparagus decreased by -20.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved asparagus imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of preserved asparagus, comprising 71% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Angola (6.6%). Namibia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved asparagus imports into South Africa stood at -13.4%. Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mauritius (-4.9%), Angola (-6.9%) and Namibia (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritius (+6.1 p.p.), Angola (+3 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -9.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported preserved asparagus in SADC, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -12.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (-7.8% per year) and Namibia (-9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
