Preserved Tomato Market Size in SADC

The SADC preserved tomato market expanded to $X in 2021, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of preserved tomatoes in SADC, making up 98% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the preserved tomatoes exports, with a CAGR of -4.7% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +13 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest preserved tomato supplier in SADC.

The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2021, overseas purchases of preserved tomatoes decreased by -7.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importer of preserved tomatoes in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total imports. Seychelles (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Seychelles (with a CAGR of +9.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 90% of total imports. These countries were followed by Seychelles, which accounted for a further 2.9%.

Among the main importing countries, Seychelles, with a CAGR of +6.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Seychelles ($X per ton) and Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Mauritius ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
