After two years of growth, the SADC primary cell and battery market decreased by -14.6% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in SADC

In value terms, primary cell and battery production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 19%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporter of primary cells and batteries in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X units) and Namibia (X units), together constituting a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cell and battery exports from South Africa stood at -18.6%. At the same time, Zambia (+18.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Zambia, Namibia and South Africa increased by +12, +4.5 and +4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -7.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (-5.7% per year) and Zambia (+2.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery importing markets in SADC were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Africa ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. Tanzania, Madagascar and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +15.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Lesotho (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
