Production of Primary Cells And Primary Batteries in SADC
In value terms, primary cells and primary batteries production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
After four years of decline, shipments abroad of primary cells and primary batteries increased by 17% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, primary cells and primary batteries exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X units), generating an 8.5% share of total exports. Botswana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -18.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+19.2%) and Botswana (+16.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2022. Zambia (+8.3 p.p.), South Africa (+8.1 p.p.) and Botswana (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest primary cells and primary batteries supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 2.1% share of total exports.
In South Africa, primary cells and primary batteries exports declined by an average annual rate of -7.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+2.3% per year) and Botswana (+11.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 70%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Primary Cells And Primary Batteries
Imports in SADC
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of primary cells and primary batteries decreased by -2.8% to X units in 2022. In general, imports showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, primary cells and primary batteries imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which amounted to 54% of total imports. Madagascar (X units) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (8.4%) and Angola (7%). Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cells and primary batteries imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Madagascar (+32.8%) and Tanzania (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-4.2%) and Angola (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24 p.p.), Madagascar (+22 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -31.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Africa ($X) and Angola ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Tanzania and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Among the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +15.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Madagascar (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
