Printing Ink Market Size in SADC
The SADC printing ink market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Printing Ink Production in SADC
In value terms, printing ink production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 20%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Printing Ink Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of printing ink increased by 1.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, printing ink exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to printing ink exports from South Africa stood at -2.3%. At the same time, Tanzania (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Tanzania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest printing ink supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports.
In South Africa, printing ink exports plunged by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+6.1%).
Printing Ink Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, overseas purchases of printing ink increased by 3.9% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, printing ink imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 63% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together constituting a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Malawi (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to printing ink imports into South Africa stood at -3.1%. At the same time, Malawi (+11.3%), Angola (+10.9%), Madagascar (+7.4%), Mozambique (+7.2%), Tanzania (+2.2%) and Botswana (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2022. Swaziland, Zambia and Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Angola (+5.1 p.p.), Malawi (+2.8 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -12.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported printing ink in SADC, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 6.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.1% share.
In South Africa, printing ink imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+4.1% per year) and Tanzania (+6.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
