In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of propellant powders, making up 43% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (25%). The following exporters - Zambia (X kg) and Namibia (X kg) - each amounted to a 5.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Swaziland (with a CAGR of +44.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 99% of total exports.

Swaziland, with a CAGR of +51.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 163% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of propellant powders was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports enjoyed a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 94%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, propellant powders imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 121%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 86% of total imports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took near 10% share of total imports. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+14.5%) and Angola (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2021. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Namibia increased by +27 and +3.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported propellant powders in SADC, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 4.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 0.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +20.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+28.3% per year) and Angola (+15.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
