Aircraft Propeller Market Size in SADC

The SADC aircraft propeller market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, picking up by 35% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -33.5% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Aircraft Propeller Production in SADC

In value terms, aircraft propeller production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Aircraft Propeller Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of propellers and rotors for civil non-powered aircraft, helicopters and aeroplanes, when their volume increased by 17% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 96%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aircraft propeller exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 61%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), constituting a 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to aircraft propeller exports from South Africa stood at -4.3%. At the same time, Zambia (+41.4%), Madagascar (+23.1%) and Namibia (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +41.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+5.9 p.p.), Zambia (+4.4 p.p.) and Madagascar (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-4.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest aircraft propeller supplier in SADC, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -11.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-0.2% per year) and Madagascar (+25.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -24.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of propellers and rotors for civil non-powered aircraft, helicopters and aeroplanes, when their volume increased by 12% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aircraft propeller imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importer of propellers and rotors for civil non-powered aircraft, helicopters and aeroplanes in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 68% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Botswana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 21% share of total imports. Mauritius (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to aircraft propeller imports into South Africa stood at -3.3%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+23.7%), Mauritius (+20.8%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-7.9%), Angola (-9.9%) and Botswana (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+13 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.7 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and Botswana saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -11.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported propellers and rotors for civil non-powered aircraft, helicopters and aeroplanes in SADC, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5% share.

In South Africa, aircraft propeller imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zimbabwe (+26.8% per year) and Mauritius (+22.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, aircraft propeller import price increased by +73.0% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 42%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
