Pumpkin Market Size in SADC

The SADC pumpkin market rose to $X in 2022, surging by 1.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Pumpkin Production in SADC

In value terms, pumpkin production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Malawi (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together accounting for 97% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +1.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

In 2022, the average yield of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in SADC amounted to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the pumpkin yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the pumpkin harvested area in SADC fell modestly to X ha, waning by -1.5% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 28%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Pumpkin Exports

Exports in SADC

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -15% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+46.3%) and Namibia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +46.3% from 2012-2022. Tanzania (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Namibia saw its share reduced by -3.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pumpkin supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.

In South Africa, pumpkin exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+6.8% per year) and Tanzania (+41.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 52%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Pumpkin Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -23% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pumpkin imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -16.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importer of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2022. Swaziland (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (18%), Lesotho (7.3%) and Namibia (7.1%). Zambia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+67.8%), Botswana (+12.0%), Swaziland (+11.4%), Zambia (+10.9%), Namibia (+5.5%) and Lesotho (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +67.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Botswana (+18 p.p.), Swaziland (+6.2 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Lesotho (-3.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-17.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest pumpkin importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Namibia ($X), together comprising 65% of total imports. Swaziland, Lesotho, Mauritius and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Among the main importing countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +73.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
