In 2022, the SADC market for PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings decreased by less than 0.1% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings, when their volume decreased by -6.4% to X square meters. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at X square meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings dropped significantly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporter of PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X square meters, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X square meters), making up a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Botswana (X square meters) and Mozambique (X square meters) - each accounted for a 4.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings exports from South Africa stood at -1.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+21.8%), Mauritius (+13.7%) and Botswana (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2022. Mauritius (+10 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -12.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 0.5% share.

In South Africa, exports of PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+17.2% per year) and Botswana (-11.2% per year).

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, declining by -9.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings decreased by -21.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per square meter), while Botswana ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X square meters of PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings were imported in SADC; increasing by 1.8% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, imports of PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings reduced to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in coverings structure, finishing at X square meters, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X square meters), Angola (X square meters), Madagascar (X square meters) and Mauritius (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings imports into South Africa stood at +3.6%. At the same time, Madagascar (+27.6%) and Mauritius (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-5.5%) and Tanzania (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+6.2 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-2.9 p.p.) and Tanzania (-5.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings in SADC, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4.7% share.

In South Africa, imports of PVC floor, wall and ceiling coverings increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-0.6% per year) and Mauritius (+12.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, dropping by -14.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
