The SADC pyrethrum and peppermint market contracted sharply to $X in 2021, reducing by -16.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a pronounced reduction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of pyrethrum and peppermint increased by 16% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 48% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons), together achieving a 47% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pyrethrum and peppermint exports from Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +6.2%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+69.2%), Lesotho (+36.3%), Madagascar (+17.4%), South Africa (+4.7%) and Namibia (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +69.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (+11 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.4 p.p.), Lesotho (+5.3 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-28.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest pyrethrum and peppermint supplying countries in SADC were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Madagascar ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 75% of total exports. Namibia, Lesotho, Tanzania and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +74.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lesotho (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pyrethrum And Peppermint Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of pyrethrum and peppermint decreased by -0.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 54%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the major importer of pyrethrum and peppermint, generating 49% of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) took a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.6%). The following importers - Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pyrethrum and peppermint in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +5.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Madagascar (+4.8% per year) and Mauritius (+8.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
