Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, pyrites exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 88%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), committing a 4.8% share of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +27.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+108.6%) and Madagascar (+36.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +108.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Namibia and Madagascar increased by +49, +4.8 and +2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest pyrites supplier in SADC, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+60.3% per year) and Madagascar (+2.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -84.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 59%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-19.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of pyrites decreased by -68.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, imports showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 232%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pyrites imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 260%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 88% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), committing a 7.6% share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pyrites imports, with a CAGR of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022. Zambia (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia saw its share reduced by -8.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pyrites in SADC, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 5.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +7.5%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+6.7%).
