The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 66%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, quilted textile products exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery), generating 68% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Botswana (5%).

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+58.2%) and Swaziland (+26.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +58.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland and Botswana increased by +22 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest quilted textile products supplying countries in SADC were Swaziland ($X), South Africa ($X) and Botswana ($X), together comprising 99% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +46.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 106%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (-3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) decreased by -81.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 190% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, quilted textile products imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key importer of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery), generating 47% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (10%) and Swaziland (5.2%). Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Swaziland (with a CAGR of +41.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Namibia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 83% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Swaziland, Zambia and Angola, which together accounted for a further 6.7%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Swaziland, with a CAGR of +33.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 237% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
