Exports in SADC

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2021.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the quinoa exports, with a CAGR of +68.7% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest quinoa supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -34.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 36%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Quinoa Imports
Imports in SADC
After five years of growth, purchases abroad of quinoa decreased by -40.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, quinoa imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 206% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 83% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) held an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (5.9%).
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+137.5%) and Mauritius (+85.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +137.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mauritius (+7.9 p.p.) and Angola (+5.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-16.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quinoa in SADC, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.
In South Africa, quinoa imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+70.9% per year) and Angola (+87.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
