Raspberry And Blackberry Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC raspberry and blackberry market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -23.7% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Raspberry And Blackberry Production in SADC

In value terms, raspberry and blackberry production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of raspberry and blackberry production was South Africa (X tons), accounting for 81% of total volume. Moreover, raspberry and blackberry production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in South Africa totaled +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+6.6% per year) and Tanzania (-1.0% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of raspberries and blackberries in SADC reduced slightly to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the raspberry and blackberry yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of raspberries and blackberries were harvested in SADC; therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area decreased by -2%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Raspberry And Blackberry Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of raspberries and blackberries exported in SADC expanded slightly to X tons, with an increase of 1.8% compared with the year before. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +118.2% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 24%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, raspberry and blackberry exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 98% of total exports in 2022.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raspberries and blackberries exports, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +13 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest raspberry and blackberry supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Raspberry And Blackberry Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of raspberries and blackberries, when their volume increased by 48% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 258% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, raspberry and blackberry imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 134% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importer of raspberries and blackberries in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 48% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Botswana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports. Angola (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+66.5%), Mauritius (+39.4%), Namibia (+30.9%), Angola (+19.5%) and Botswana (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +66.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lesotho (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+18 p.p.), Namibia (+7.8 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Lesotho (-5.2 p.p.), Botswana (-7.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-13.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest raspberry and blackberry importing markets in SADC were Mauritius ($X), South Africa ($X) and Botswana ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports. Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +57.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 86% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lesotho (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
